PRESS RELEASE

RIDING TEAM RETURN AS CHAMPIONS

Eleven riders from the Riding for the Disabled Association’s Unicorn Centre at Hemlington, near Middlesbrough competed at the RDA National Championships last month at Hartpury, Gloucestershire, returning with a string of accolades, medals and rosettes.

2015 is the eleventh consecutive year the Unicorn Centre has been qualifying riders to this prestigious event which is the biggest of its kind in the world for disabled riders and drivers.  In 2000 just one rider represented the Centre but in following years up to fifteen have qualified. Many won medals and rosettes as well as a huge amount of respect from their peers and everyone who knew or worked with them.

Following months of training, hard work and fundraising, the riders were accompanied by a team of coaches, staff, volunteers and families who did so much to support these amazing riders over the weekend, with especial thanks to John Thompson who donated his time to take the horses and some of the team to Gloucestershire.

Three Unicorn Centre horses completed the team: Louistic de Sie, Angus of Mendick and Fizzy Izzy and although competing with some highly-trained professional dressage horses, they held their own, and in many cases beat them!

Results were: Dressage Classes; 1st & 3rd, Cheryl Clark on Louistic De Sie; 1st Megan Wilcox on Dunkie; 1st & 7th Tamara Ullyart on Fizzy Izzy; 1st & 2nd Anna Chadfield on Minstrel Tonto Two Tone; 2nd & 6th Jamie Gargett on Fizzy-Izzy; Joint 3rd Emma Wood on Louistic De Sie.  Countryside Challenge: 5th Kelly McKie on Angus of Mendick; Callum Martin on Fizzy-Izzy in came 2nd in the Combined Training and 4th in Showjumping (the first time the Centre has qualified for showjumping). Lynn Harrison and Paul Conway both completed the Countryside Challenge and Paul also gained a distinction in the Horse Care and Knowledge Class.

Unicorn Centre Chair of Trustees, Maggie Tansley, led Team Unicorn at Hartpury.  She said, “I cannot express how proud I am of these amazing riders.  They have competed against the best and proved yet again how competitive and competent they are. The coaching they’ve received to achieve this monumental success has been superlative, and I was absolutely bowled over by success of the weekend.”
