Riders who qualified for the dressage finals are Stephen McGechan on Thunder, Emma Wood, Laura Curson, Cheryl Clark all riding Louistic de Sie, and Megan Wilcox riding her own pony Dunkie. Laura Forbes, who prevously worked at the Unicorn Centre as Volunteer Co-ordinator and Learning Support Assistant, returned to qualify on Lilly.

Brooke-Leigh Johnson and Cheryl Clark both qualified in the show jumping.

The Countryside Challenge qualifers are six year old Annie Waterson riding Spider (our youngest ever qualifier), Lynn Harrison on Ricky, Jo Lewis on Louistic de Sie,  Laura Curson on Ricky, Keira Atkinson riding Charlie and Abbie Maddison on Louistic de Sie.

Cheryl Clark and Laura Curson have both qualified in two disciplines and are hoping to compete at the Championships in both.

Six-year old Annie said, “I I love riding Spider, he’s so good at doing the Countryside Challenge. I want to go to the big show so much, it’ll be so much fun.”

That’s the good news.  The bad news is that the Centre can only take three horses to the Championships, and with competition taking place over three days, they will not be able to provide a ride for each of the qualifying riders.  Unless cash is raised to pay the costs of hiring extra horses, some very disappointed riders will have to be left behind.

The Unicorn Centre is organising a huge team to accompany the riders and three Centre horses including coaches, and volunteers along with some learners studying on the Unicorn Centre Diploma courses in Work-Based Horse Care.  It will cost  £2000 to pay for transport for the horses and the team, horse hire, stabling, food and accommodation, entry fees and equipment.

Acting Centre Manager Christie Beadle said, “Our finances are under huge strain and we cannot cover all the expenses to get these talented young people to the Championships.  I’m appealing personally to everyone in the community to help us by making a small donation towards our costs. Otherwise we are facing the appalling possibility that all our qualifiers may not being able to attend this world status event.

She continued, “We’ve had riders qualify for the National Championships for thirteen years and we’re so proud of their achievements.  In the past people have been really generous donating towards the costs and it would be great if we could raise enough again this year to help these talented riders succeed.  They’re training so hard and really want to go to the Championships.”

Donations for the Unicorn Centre team can be made direct to the Unicorn Centre by calling 01642 576222 or by visiting their BTMyDonate page at https://mydonate.bt.com/events/natchamps
