Heats were held at the Unicorn Centre for the Pony and Rider Countryside Challenge competition in May, with riders competing from RDA groups within the Yorkshire and Cleveland region. Four riders from the Unicorn Centre qualified for Hartpury: Alice King who has successfully completed over the last two years, and Jane Lishman, Grace Turner and Tracy Green. Alice and Jane both later qualified for the dressage meaning Lorraine Dobson will take their place for the Countryside Challenge Championship. Kate Telford, who narrowly missed out on qualifying on the day by half of a percent, has also now been given a place at the Championships.

Dressage qualifiers were also held in May at Middleton Park, Leeds, where a further eleven riders qualified – the highest ever result for the Unicorn Centre. These were: Alice King, Angela Hartas, Marianne Coutts and Sarah Telford who all completed at the last two Championships, along with Fiona Bennett, Daisy Appleton, Sian Floyd, Laura Forbes (who works as a Learning Support Worker at the Centre), Jamie Gargett and Susan Wilcox.

Sarah Telford has now qualified for the Championships five times and is joined this year by Jane Lishman who scored 75.5% in her qualifier, the second overall highest test score of the day.

Unicorn Centre Yard Manager Heidi Hutchinson said, "This is a fantastic achievement for our 15 riders and we are thrilled that we have beaten our previous record of dressage qualifiers. Our riders have been attending regular dressage clinics with instructor Kay Brandon, and their hard work has really paid off. We are hoping to have a great championship with experienced dressage riders like Sarah, Jane and Marianne completing for us.”

The Unicorn Centre has set up a fundraising appeal to find sponsors to fund the finalists, ponies and their support team. Transport for riders, instructors, volunteer helpers, and of course, the ponies, all need to found, as well as funding for hotel accommodation, food, riding attire for the competitors, and new tack for the ponies. Anybody able to help should contact the Centre as soon as possible.

NOTE TO EDITORS: A photo opportunity will be available at the Centre on Wednesday 8 June at 5.30 pm when all the riders will be available.
