Top tips
In every category, the judges will be looking for a picture that not only fits the category, but also shows some photography skills. Here are some top tips to bear in mind:
• Choose a well-lit area to take your picture
• Get in close to the subject (if it’s safe to do so) or zoom in.
• Think about the composition (where things are in the picture)
• Some good images are a lucky shot – but why not plan the picture you want in advance and try to set it up. There’s more chance of success that way
• In order to look good when printed, images need to be a high resolution. Most digital cameras will do this automatically but sometimes you need to specify the resolution, which is measured in ‘dots per inch’ or ‘dpi’. Images should be 300dpi or more.
Before taking your pictures, take a look at the Health & Safety Best Practice guidelines below so your photo isn’t disqualified before being considered!

Health & Safety Best Practice
All photos should comply with current RDA ‘Best Practice’, or they will not be considered for the competition. The following is a quick checklist of a few points which have spoiled otherwise lovely photographs. These are based on previously rejected pictures:
• All riders and carriage drivers must wear proper protective headwear. All jackets and anoraks must be fastened and jewellery removed. Long hair should be tied back, gloves are recommended and footwear must be shoes or boots with small heels for riders unless toe caps or daps are fitted. Helpers should wear stout shoes or boots and any jackets should be fastened.
• Headcollars should not be used underneath a noseband or flash. It is not acceptable to use two sets of reins with the set not being used by the rider wound round the ponies’ necks, etc.
If you’re ready to submit your entry, then email your photos to us with your name, address and telephone number. (Remember, two photos per email please).
By submitting your photograph to be entered in the Unicorn Centre Photo Competition you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions:
You are the author and/or owner of the copyright of the photograph(s) submitted.
You are not a professional photographer.
Your photograph was taken after 1 January 2015.
You have gained permission to use this photograph from anyone depicted in the image. Where necessary this permission has been given by a parent or carer. The permission has been given in full knowledge that any photograph entered for this competition may be used for publicity.
You agree to let the Unicorn Centre reproduce and use your photograph(s) for any appropriate purpose, including publicity and fundraising.
