DISABLED RIDING CENTRE’S SADDLE & HAY APPEALS

THE Riding for the Disabled Association’s Unicorn Centre, based at Hemlington near Middlesbrough, is embarking on an ambitious fund raising campaign in 2016.

Although many charities are finding it tough to survive, the Unicorn Centre, which is self-funding, is determined to ensure that the past eighteen years of providing riding and therapy to children and adults in the Tees Valley is celebrated and continues for many years to come.

Several projects are being developed to achieve continuity well into the 2020s and beyond with the first two aimed at smaller items that the public can identify with and support.

The Saddle Up Project aims to raise £7,000 to buy five special saddles with moveable knee and thigh blocks. These saddles will help riders progress with their horse riding and reach their riding goals, because as they grow into adulthood, their height and weight can require more support and stability in the leg area.

Currently the Centre has raised £2,700 for the project thanks to funders Project Dirt Coulby Newham and the Manheim Trust.  The Centre is hoping that the public appeal will raise the balance.

This winter’s wet weather has had a serious financial impact on the Centre, as its twenty horses could not be turned out to graze in the paddocks. As a consequence hay and feed bills have increased enormously. The Bale of Hay project aims to raise £2500 by asking donors to buy a bale of hay for £4.

Centre Manager Claire Pitt said, “We are enormously grateful for all the support we receive, both financial and in kind. However, we are hoping that these two innovative projects will inspire people to dig deep and make a donation. They can donate by visiting our BTMyDonate page, or by sending us a cheque.”

She continued, “And for budding photographers, we’re looking for 13 photographs depicting “Activities at the Unicorn Centre” for our 2017 calendar. The winning photos will be printed in the calendar acknowledging the photographer. The cover page winner will receive a £25 Gift Voucher with a rosette for all winners. Send to (each photo 2mb or less) This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the subject heading “Calendar Photo Competition”.  Entries are free and close on 30 June 2016 and please make sure you have permission to take the photo first.”
