DISABLED RIDING CENTRE TOUCHES HEARTS OF LOCALS

The Riding for the Disabled Association’s Unicorn Centre at Hemlington, Middlesbrough is one of the local charities in the Tees Valley struggling to survive during the Coronavirus epidemic.

With 19 horses and ponies delivering riding and therapy to about 200 participants each week, assisted by 16 staff and 100 volunteers, it  relies entirely on income from activities and fundraising to raise £300,000 each year to cover its costs.

All this has come to an abrupt stop.  No lessons, no competitions, no events. No income from this at all.

However, a publicity campaign has motivated local people to help.   One of the first was the grandmother of a participant who is continuing to pay for her grand daughter’s weekly riding lessons until she can resume. Competitors in the Centre’s monthly dressage competitions have donated their monthly entry fees as a way of helping, and donations are coming in for the Centre’s Feed & Feet Appeal, which has raised over 50% of its £2000 target in just four days.

Local artist Malcolm Davies from Hartlepool has also stepped in to help.  He raised £200 for the Centre from an online auction of his painting of Thirsk Racecourse by starting a fundraising Facebook page called 'Art against Coronavirus' https://www.facebook.com/artagainstcoronavirus/

The sole purpose of the page is to raise money for local good causes who are going to find their funding streams either reduced or removed completely.   Malcolm knew about the Centre through friends and through his daughter’s involvement with horses years ago.

He said, “ As an artist of over 50 years I thought the way I could raise funds was to offer my artwork, and that of others at great prices. My hope was that rather than just asking for donations, as lots of people love artwork, the offer of getting something in return would increase interest and involvement with the page and hopefully increase donations.”

The Centre’s Patron, 2012 Olympic eventer Nicola Wilson has also jogged in to help. She broke her neck competing with her horse in Aarville, Belgium last June, but after a good recovery, she is now back in the saddle and keen to support the Centre.  She ran 10km to raise funds for the Centre through the Feed and Feet Appeal.

Centre Manager Claire Pitt said, “We are delighted at the level of generosity of local people during this difficult time, and thank each and every one. Everyone at the Centre is determined to leave no stone unturned to generate sufficient funds to enable us to continue offering riding, therapy and training to all our participants. Donations such as this are such a help.”

The Centre’s fundraising “Feed and Feet Appeal” can be accessed at www.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/feedandfeet

It  is also encouraging people to help raise funds by shopping through Amazon Smile and EasyFundraising.
