WANT A CAREER WITH HORSES?

  Former learner Sarah Law

The Riding for the Disabled Association’s Unicorn Centre based at Hemlington, near Middlesbrough has started recruitment for vacancies on its 2020/21 City & Guilds Diploma Programmes in Horse Care.

The Centre has been partnering with Middlesbrough College for over twenty years to deliver work-based courses in Horse Care and Management.  Next term it is able to offer fully-funded places on the full-time Level 1 & 2 Diplomas in Work Based Horse Care programmes for 16 -18 year olds as before.

Centre Manager Claire Pitt said, “These accredited courses are really popular with young people considering an equine career, as well as providing a fantastic opportunity to learn in a professional riding centre. Our results have always been excellent and currently we are employing nine out of the current sixteen Unicorn Centre staff who started off here as learners or volunteers!

She continued, “During lockdown we’re continuing to support our current learners enrolled on our Horse Care Diploma programmes. Staff are providing on-line tuition and assessment with the aim for all 11 to achieve their target qualifications by the end of the summer term.  Apart from income from lessons, our most important funding stream is from our accredited courses, so this will help us to deliver more opportunities for our disabled riders.“

Learning Support can be provided for learners with additional needs and all learners can access Middlesbrough College’s facilities and resources. A weekly attendance allowance of £20 per week is offered to each learner.  They will also be offered extra opportunities including competing, training towards RDA coaching qualifications, beach trips with the ponies and attending outside events subject to following current Covid-19 safety guidelines.

Progression into employment has been successful for many learners with several gaining employment at the Centre, such as Sarah. Read her story below.

Sarah 32, from Middlesbrough, is training to be a teacher.  She enrolled in 2005 on the Centre’s Level 1 Diploma in Work-Based Horse Care programme as a student and quickly progressed to Level 2, achieving this in July 2007.  She was employed by the Centre as a learning support assistant working with learners on the Diploma courses. Sarah’s aptitude and experience then resulted in her taking on the role of a learning support assistant for several years, fitting the role around her university course. Sarah left the Centre in July 2019 to progress onto her PGCE year.

Sarah said, “Being a student at the Centremade me realise I wanted to be a member of staff one day. The Unicorn Centre has been part of my life on and off for the past 13 years.  I initially started as a volunteer, became a student and then a full time member of staff. The Centre allowed me to study as a Teaching Assistant, progressing to working in schools. After a few years I returned to university to train to be a primary school teacher. The Centre has always been very accommodating, giving me a role to play alongside my degree studies by working part time to support the level 2 learners. The Unicorn Centre is the place I have to thank as it has opened doors and allowed me to progress in a career of my choice. “

Places on the September course are limited, so anyone interested should contact Centre Manager Claire Pitt on 01642 576222 as soon as possible.
