Heats were held at the Unicorn Centre for the Pony and Rider Countryside Challenge competition in May, with 48 riders competing from 4 RDA groups within the Yorkshire and Cleveland region.  Four riders from the Unicorn Centre qualified for the Championships:  Lucy Akbudak on Charlie, Fiona Bennett on Tiss, (who also qualified at Dressage and has taken that place, meaning Nick Walton qualified by default for the Countryside Challenge), David Rudd on Louie and Gavin Beatty on Murphy 1. Lucy was highest qualifying rider of the day with a score of 90.5%.

Dressage qualifiers were also held in May at Middleton Park, Leeds, where a further six riders qualified – Fiona Bennett on Noah, Susan Wilcox on Louie, (who rode a cracking test and was joint first with a score of 71.2% in a class of 22 competitors), Jane Lishman on Grenadier, Alice King on Grenadier.  Marianne Coutts and one of the Centre’s NVQ Level 2 students Jamie Gargett both qualified on Geisha. All qualified last year too.

In 2008 HRH The Princes Royal presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to rider Susan Wilcox, then 33 years, who has ridden at the Centre since it opened, and ridden since the tender age of two!  Susan is a veteran of three Special Olympics games, including representing her country at the World Games in the USA in 1999.

Unicorn Centre Yard Manager Heidi Hutchinson said, "This is a fantastic achievement for our riders and we are thrilled that their standards improve year on year. They’ve been attending regular dressage clinics with instructors Kay Brandon and Felicity Evens, and their hard work has really paid off. We’re hoping to have a great national championships with so many experienced dressage riders competing for us.”

The Unicorn Centre has set up a fundraising appeal to find sponsors to fund the finalists, ponies and their support team.  Transport for riders, instructors, volunteer helpers, and of course, the ponies, all need to be found, as well as funding for hotel accommodation, food, riding attire for the competitors, and new tack for the ponies.  Anybody able to help should contact the Centre as soon as possible. So far, one very generous former volunteer has donated £1000, but at least £3000 more is required to get the team to Gloucestershire.
