In previous years, donations from the public and a kind sponsor who provided a horsebox for the weekend of competition at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire, enabled the riders to successfully take part and bringing back a fistful of rosettes and medals to Teesside.  So they’re hoping that an appeal to the public might just produce enough money to pay for the vital horse transport, accommodation, uniforms and tack and equipment.

Centre Manager Claire Pitt said, “Our riders have trained for months to qualify for Hartpury, but we are a victim of our own success.  Twelve riders have qualified this year which will make the weekend costs very high.  Transport is going to be an issue – the quote we’ve received so far for the horsebox is £1,200 plus VAT plus accommodation for the driver!!! We’ll be taking 5 horses and ponies, some of whom need new tack so it’s not going to be cheap when we factor in accommodation for horses, staff, volunteers and our Level 3 student support team.

She continued, “I’m just hoping we can find a fairy godmother or a business who would be willing to support these fantastic riders – they deserve the chance to succeed after all their hard work.”

Results from the RDA Regional Qualifier Countryside Challenge, ‘Farmyard Walk’ which was hosted by the Unicorn Centre on 27 April:  Brian Dodsworth on Loustic de Sie, Lucy Akbudak (the only junior rider) on Charlie, Amy Connell on Syd and Laura Forbes on Murphy II.

Results from the Regional RDA Dressage Qualifier at Middleton Park, Leeds on Sunday 19 May:  Susan Wilcox on Loustic de Sie, Joel Fitzpatrick on Noah, Alice King on Harry, Jane Lishman on Maidendale Grenadier (with the 2nd highest score of the day), Jamie Gargett also on Maidendale Grenadier, Tracey Wight on Noah, Emma Woods on Loustic de Sie and Fiona Bennett.

Tracey Wight and Jamie Gargett are both Level 3 learners on the Centre’s successful Diploma in Work-Based Horse Care courses.  They worked particularly hard because as well as competing they were responsible for preparing the horses and looking after them at the dressage competition.

The Centre may also be taking further riders, as qualification for RDA’s newest discipline, show-jumping, is about to take place this weekend.
