In previous years, donations from the public and a kind sponsor who provided a horsebox for the weekend of competition at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire, enabled the riders to successfully take part and bringing back a fistful of rosettes and medals to Teesside.  Thankfully an appeal to the public and fundraising events produced some money to pay for the vital horse transport, accommodation, uniforms and tack and equipment, although currently there is a shorfall of £1500 which is still to be raised.

 

Team Unicorn’s fantastic victory followed months of training and success in the regional qualifiers and continues the high standard Unicorn Centre is now achieving at national level. 

 

The riders were accompanied to Hartpury by their families and friends, five horses, three instructors and a team of the Centre’s Diploma students and volunteers.  Yard Manager Heidi Hutchinson said, “All the riders worked so hard and performed way above our expectations, despite the really hot weather.  We are so grateful to everyone who contributed to their success, particularly the students, volunteers Clare Pope and Lindsay Raistrick and dressage clinic coach Kay Brandon who spent many hours coaching the dressage team.”

 

Kay Brandon said “Standards at the National Championships really do get higher each year.  The classes get bigger, the quality of the horses gets better and the standard of riding improves.  But Team Unicorn held its own, as you can see from the results.”
