They’ll all be competing in dressage or the Countryside Challenge at the RDA National Championships in Hartpury, Gloucestershire on 18 – 20 July.
 
Riders who qualified for the dressage finals are Lucy Akbudak (qualifed last year) on Louistic de Sie, Emma Wood on Louistic de Sie, Abbie Maddison on Charlie, Tamara Ullyart on Charlie, Fiona Bennett on Paddy and Jane Lishman on her own horse Lily Delight. Jane has also kindly allowed Daisy Appleton to compete on Lily Delight. Both Abbie and Tamara are first-timers. Abbie qualifed six years ago but was poorly and was devastated when she couldn't go.
 
Countryside Challenge qualifers are: Callum Martin on Charlie and Level 1 student Kelly McKie on Alfie. Daniel Pine on Tinkerbelle and Kate Telford on Maidendale Grenadier also qualified.
 
The Unicorn Centre is organising a huge team to accompany the riders and the four horses including eight coaches and staff as well as students and volunteers. Transport alone will cost over £1200 for the hire of the horsebox, and with accommodation, entry fees and equipment and clothing, the total will rise to at least £3000.
 
Centre Manager Claire Pitt said, “Our recent appeal to support Jane Lishman to get to Rio has been amazing, with so many people wanting to help. Jane has just heard she’s been selected to represent the British Dressage Northern Region and England at the 2014 Para Home International from 30th May – 1st June at Vale View EC, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire!
“ It would be great if we had a similar response to support our young people in their desire to succeed. They are training so hard and really want to go to the Championships.”
 
She continued, “The problem is, the Centre doesn’t get any financial support, so if we can’t find sponsors for the riders, we’ll have to dig very deep into our coffers or tell them they can’t go. It’s a terrible dilemma.”

The Unicorn Centre provides riding lessons and therapy for children and adults from 5 years old, both disabled and able-bodied. The Centre's horses and ponies are carefully chosen for their temperament, size and ability to work with disabled riders, and a hoist facility for mounting onto ponies is available for wheelchair users... read more
