OUR COLUMN FOR THE SEPTEMBER EVENING GAZETTE 14 SEPTEMBER 2022 

 

Hello everyone. 

 

The trustees, volunteers, participants and staff of the Unicorn Centre would like to extend their heartfelt sadness and condolences to the Royal Family, in particularly to our President, Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal who visited the Centre on three occasions.  

 

Tributes in the coming days will doubtless mention The Queen’s enduring love of and affinity with horses. Her instinctive understanding of the power of horses to do good was a source of inspiration to so many people within the Riding for the Disabled Association.

 

The Unicorn Centre will be closed on the day of Her Majesty’s funeral, Monday 19th September.

 

We’re now into week two of the Autumn term.  After two weeks of a thorough clean and tidy up and the installation of the new arena surface, everything is ready for our participants.  The horses have had a break too, and are all fit and well.

 

If you know someone who could benefit from lessons or therapy on our wonderful horses or our mechanical horse Blackberry, have a look at the Riding Lessons page on our website where you can download and complete the application and medical forms. Our Centre is fully equipped for people with disabilities including a mounting hoist and our coaches are all RDA trained. 

 

Would you like to volunteer here? If you’re 14 years or over with a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to work with disabled riders and horses, we’d love to see you. Give Denise a call today. You’ll need a DBS check and induction, and then you’re ready to help our riders achieve something amazing! 

 

We have two Just Giving sponsorship pages running at the moment.  One is for Greg who has cycled the 451k Veloscenic across northern France in aid of the Centre Greg Rubin is fundraising for RDA Unicorn Centre (justgiving.com) and Penny who has run the Great North Run Penny Spicer is fundraising for RDA Unicorn Centre (justgiving.com)  We’re always blown away when people carry out amazing challenges for us, so please support their efforts.

 

Our next Tack and Tog Sale is being held at the Centre on Wednesday 21 September from 5 to 7pm where we’ll be selling lots of surplus or donated tack and riding gear, so do come and get a bargain.  This is a buyers only event.  

 

And finally, don’t forget about our Fun Dog Show on Sunday 25 September at the Centre – the first at the Centre for three years! Classes are £2 each, with entries taken on the day from 1100 and judging starting at 1200. There’ll be stalls and refreshments too.
