EVENING GAZETTE “YOUR SAY” COLUMN FOR WEDNESDAY 15 MARCH 2023
SPRING ON ITS WAY?
Apparently spring is on its way, but I think you’ll agree it feels a long way off at the moment. Our ponies are still tucked up in their rugs when they’re out in the fields, and are always quite keen to return to their dry warm stables. And our busy yard team will be very pleased when the mud has gone – some of our more hairy ponies are quite a challenge to keep clean!
One of the downsides of the Centre becoming 25 years old is that some things start to need replacing or repairing. At present we’re focussing on upgrading our field fencing which is starting to deteriorate. Some of our bigger horses are taking full advantage of any fence weakness to head into fields we’re saving for spring/summer grazing, and cheeky ponies like Ruby and Acer are jumping over or squeezing under to go visiting their friends.
This project is going to cost a lot of money. Are there any local fencing suppliers who would be prepared to donate some posts, rails and gates so that we can get the work done soon? We’ve also set up a fundraising page here: Unicorn Friends is fundraising for The RDA Centre in Cleveland Ltd (justgiving.com) . If you can help, we’d be so grateful.
Did you hear our recent appeal on BBC Radio Tees for new volunteers to help with our riding lessons? If you are able to donate an hour or two of your time, we’d love to hear from you. It’s so rewarding and fun too!
Our “Unicorn Day” fundraiser is on Wednesday 12 April. Aimed at families in the local community, there’ll be lots of Unicorn activities including rides on our “Unicorn” ponies around a special Unicorn themed course for children aged 5 and over, and the chance to meet and pat a baby “Unicorn”. There’ll be lots of stalls too and refreshments. Entry is free but pony rides are £10 each, 2 for £19 and must be pre-booked by calling on 01642 576222. Our riding horse simulator Blackberry will also be in action for older children to try out. We still have availability for crafters, so do get in touch if you want a table.
Looking for activities for pony-mad children in the school holidays? We’re running our popular Pony Care sessions in the Easter holidays on Wednesday 6 April. A three hour afternoon session costs just £34.50 and includes a riding lesson and various fun pony activities. Please pre-book to secure a slot.
Thank you for your support and Happy Easter!
