MOVING FORWARD STRATEGICALLY
Following the pandemic, the nation’s mental health suffered significantly. The numbers of those suffering with loneliness, anxiety and depression remain higher than pre-pandemic levels and many are still struggling to return to going out in public.
For many of our RDA family - from participants, parents, and volunteers - being unable to access horses and RDA activities has significantly impacted their mental and physical health.
RDA is dedicated to helping participants return to RDA activities, and introduce more people to the mental health benefits of interacting with horses.

SPRINGTIME AT THE UNICORN CENTRE
It’s early spring and our ponies have noticed! They’re shedding their thick winter coats now with the result that everyone on the yard gets covered in horsehair. The grass is growing too, so there’s a renewed spring in their step as they enjoy the sunshine!
The feeling of new beginnings continues as we gradually relax our Covid restrictions, but we’re still advising the wearing of masks to protect our vulnerable participants.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE
It‘s with a very heavy heart I have to tell you that, after 24 years, I’m leaving the Unicorn Centre. This has been so very much more than a job; rather my and my family’s home and passion for all this time. Thank you everyone who has supported me and the Centre over the years and for helping making it such a very special experience. It’s been a huge and emotional decision but the time has come to hand over the reins to a new Centre Manager. I am moving on to take up a new post with another local charity, Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind.
DRESSAGE TEAM OVERCOME CHALLENGES

Sam Gladstone and her horse are true survivors.
Both of them have had extraordinary challenges to meet, but thanks to the support of the NHS and some fantastic veterinary care, they are now doing what they like doing best – competing in dressage competitions.
Earlier this month, the indomitable pair were back together competing at the RDA Unicorn Centre’s British Dressage competition. The Unicorn Centre, a registered charity based in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, has been running these competitions for several years now, to raise its profile and funds. It’s the only venue in the region delivering this competition, and is well supported.
OUR CENTRE MANAGER IS MOVING ON
Announcement from the Board of Trustees dated 8th February 2022:
Centre Manager Claire Pitt has announced that she will be leaving the Unicorn Centre on the 24th April this year to take up a new post with another local charity. Claire has been at the Centre since it opened in 1998 and her contribution has been immense.
We will have an opportunity later to reflect on and celebrate her impact over the years. We wish her and her family every success and happiness for their future.
The Centre will continue to provide services as normal during this transition period.
